When a predator attacks, it mixes two chemicals inside a tiny armored chamber in its body. The reaction instantly heats the liquid to one hundred degrees Celsius, the boiling point of water, and blasts it out in a scalding, toxic spray. And it does not just squirt once. It fires in rapid machine-gun pulses, up to five hundred times a second, with a popping sound you can actually hear. It can even swivel its rear like a turret to aim in almost any direction. The beetle keeps two harmless chemicals — hydrogen peroxide and hydroquinone — in separate storage tanks inside its body. When threatened, it squirts them into a tough little chamber holding special enzymes (catalase and peroxidase) that make the two react super fast. This reaction releases heat (it's called 'exothermic'), boiling the liquid to 100°C, plus oxygen gas that builds up pressure and blasts the burning spray out. The machine-gun pulsing happens because a stretchy membrane and a valve act like an automatic gate: each tiny explosion swells the membrane shut, then the blast releases the pressure so it pops open again for the next pulse, repeating hundreds of times a second.
